Raksha Bandhan 2025 - Know the Right Time to Tie Rakhi This Year

Rakhi Bazaar, New Delhi. This year, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Saturday, 9 August 2025. This festival falls on the full moon day of the Shravan month in the Hindu calendar. The auspicious time for tying Rakhi in 2025 will start from 5:47 AM to 1:24 PM.

According to the Vedic Panchangam, the full moon day of Shravan will start on August 08 from 2:12 PM and end the next day on August 09 at 1:24 PM.

This occasion is the most awaited day for the siblings, as this festival represents the love and promise that binds their bond.

On Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie beautiful Rakhis on their brothers’ wrists and apply ceremonial tilak of Roli-Chawal on their forehead, praying for their brothers' long life and success. In return for Rakhi, brothers promise to protect their sisters for all time and give gifts to express their care and affection.

Raksha Bandhan is widely celebrated in India and throughout the world. Siblings, cousins, and all family members get together to celebrate the Rakhi festival by wearing new clothes, doing Pooja rituals, exchanging gifts, spending quality time together, and preparing delicious food items and sweet dishes at home.

In old times, tying Rakhi was limited to sisters and brothers only. But nowadays, in modern times, anyone can tie a Rakhi to the person they love, like girls can tie Rakhis to friends, cousins, nephews, bhabhi, and even their father.

Knots & Thread Guidelines

  • From a religious perspective, tying three knots is considered auspicious because it symbolizes the three main deities of the Trimurti—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva to bless siblings with health, happiness, and longevity.
  • Use a pure cotton thread Rakhi—avoid plastic or metal, which may later be layered with a gold/silver Rakhi. Choose natural threads that are eco-friendly and safe for skin, especially for children.

Facing Direction

  • Best posture: Sister faces east, brother faces north. Alternatively, "brother east" and "sister north" are acceptable. Avoid the south direction because it is associated with death.

Attire & Appearance

  • Wear bright, festive clothes—cheerful colors are the best option. Avoid wearing black clothing, as it is considered inauspicious from a religious perspective.
  • Ensure a clean, respectable appearance after a morning bath by putting on ironed traditional clothing and performing your daily prayers.

Ritual Plate (Thali) Essentials

  • Prepare a clean thali with Roli (vermilion), Akshat (rice grains), a lit diya (lamp), sweets, and the Rakhi thread.
  • During the Rakhi rituals, first apply tilak, offer sweets, tie the Rakhi, perform aarti, then the brother gives a gift or money to his sister.
