Yes, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated as Avani Avittam or Upakarmam in South India. The festival is mainly for the male members in the family. On this auspicious day of Shravan month, men change the heavenly string called Janeu, after taking a holy dip. The Janeu or holy thread is tied across the body after the ritual. The change in the Janeu is representative of atonement of all their past sins.
